The frame 

The frame is the exterior part of your glasses that holds the lenses together. Basically, the frame you choose can determine whether your glasses make you look like a fashion-forward influencer or an '80s serial killer. The frame is made of three parts. 

Frame front

The frame front is the section of the frame that holds the lenses in. It's typically made of metal (titanium or carbon fiber) or plastic (zyl and nylon).

Temples

The frame's temple section secures the glasses behind your ears. This section often varies in design and length, and glass wearers need to find one that feels comfortable on their face shape. 

Nose pads

The nose pads provide comfort and a secure fit on the nose for your glasses. Without this crucial element, your glasses would slide off your face anytime you looked slightly downward.  

There are adjustable vs. fixed nose pad options. The names of each probably give you enough context on the differences between the two but know that adjustable nose pad is a much more common option. 

The lenses 

If the frames are the equivalent of the cool new outfit you bought for your next hot date, the lenses can be compared to the deodorant you buy for the date. It’s not exciting, but it’s something you know that’s critical.  

Simply put, the lenses are what actually allow you to see better through your glasses!

Lens material 

Most lenses are made of glass, plastic, or polycarbonate. 

  • Polycarbonate: Polycarbonate is a popular option because it comes with built-in UV protection, is thinner than plastic or glass, and is highly impact resistant. However, this also means it's the most expensive option.  

  • Plastic: Plastic lenses are an affordable option and give great optical clarity. But they're thicker than polycarbonate and don't come with built-in UV protection.  

  • Glass: Lenses made with glass were popular in previous decades, but they are less common now. You know how everyone in the '80s looked like they were wearing glasses that were thick enough to stop a bullet? That's because they had lenses made of glass. Glass lenses are thick, heavy, and break easily, so they're no longer a preferred choice.  

Coatings and treatments

Your lenses can come with many types of coatings and treatments to make your glasses last longer and give you a better experience. Some of the options are: 

  • Anti-reflective 

  • Scratch-resistant 

  • UV protective coatings  

  • Tints and photochromic options  

Hinges 

You have probably never given a single thought to eyeglass hinges in your entire life. And why should you? That would be like thinking about the vent tube in your oven.  

Well, as dry and boring as hinges may be, they do serve a purpose. Hinges allow your glasses to open and close smoothly. Over time, hinges typically get worn out with use and can become stuck or broken, but they're easily repaired or replaced.  

There are two main types of hinges: standard and spring-loaded. Standard hinges are the most common as they’re affordable, easy to repair, and durable. Spring hinges are better suited for activewear but can be challenging to repair.
